World Diabetes Day
World Diabetes Day has been held since 1991, prior to the increased incidence of diabetes around the world. This world day was created to increase global awareness about this disease. It is a perfect day to direct public attention to the causes, symptoms, complications and treatment of an affliction which is on the rise each year across the whole world.
Diabetes is a very common disease, affecting 6% of the population. Its frequency increases with age, and therefore some 15% or more of all people over the age of seventy suffer from this disease. According to data from the Ministry of Health and Social Policy, the number of people in Spain who suffer from diabetes exceeds 3 million and the forecast is that this will double to 6 million within 20 years, to which would have to be added all those who are yet to be diagnosed.
