CARDIOVASCULAR RISK, OUTSTANDING ASSIGNMENT FOR THE PEOPLE OF GRANADA
The results of a research programme on cardiovascular health instigated by PULEVA are presented at the Granada College of Physicians.
According to the Institute of Statistics of Andalucía, Granada is the province with the highest rate of mortality from cardiovascular disease in the whole of the Andalucian Community.
Granada, 25th of March, 2010.- This afternoon the symposium “A study of coronary risk factors in the population of Granada”, imparted by Dr. José Luis Marti García, cardiologist with more than 30 years professional experience, was held at the headquarters of the Official College of Physicians of Granada, within the framework of the primary coronary prevention programme for the populace of Granada, instigated by PULEVA.
The event enjoyed the participation of Dr. Leandro Plaza Celemín, President of the Spanish Heart Foundation; D. Eduardo Corral Román, Deputy Director General of PULEVA; the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Indalecio Sánchez-Montesinos; and Dr. Javier De Teresa Galván, President of the College of Physicians of Granada.
Specifically, it was the President of the College of Physicians of Granada, Dr. Javier De Teresa Galván, who was charged with introducing the event and the members of the presidential board, highlighting the importance of studies such as the present one to make society aware of the opportunity to improve health through prevention, and for the general promotion of healthy habits and lifestyles. He underlined, moreover, that the institution has its doors open to any other institutions and initiatives that seek to collaborate to this effect; emphasizing that, like all natives of Granada, he feels PULEVA to be an essential part of the heritage of our province.
The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Indalecio Sánchez-Montesinos, also sought to emphasize the importance of this research and the cooperation undertaken by the faculty he heads wherever instances arise that open up new channels for the future.
Dr. Marti explained the work undertaken to research the coronary risk factors in the populace of Granada, as part of the 2005-2010 programme instigated by PULEVA. During this period, a total of seven observation and intervention studies were carried out in relation to the coronary risk factors and eating habits of 14.000 healthy people from Granada. In addition, three publications have been published “Cardio-healthy Lifestyles”, “Primary Coronary Prevention” and “XX Years of Preventive Cardiology in Granada”) and two monographs sponsored by the Town Council of Granada (“Neighbourhood Heart” and “Coronary Risk Factors”), which were distributed to all Neighbourhood Associations.
The conclusions, outlined by Dr. Marti, of the research carried out during these five years, were that “the coronary risk factors found amongst the populace of Granada are in the very high numbers, but what most causes concern is the general public’s lack of information about basic concepts such as arteriosclerosis, risk factors, Mediterranean diet, nutrition, omega-3, physical exercise, sedentary lifestyles”.
During his participation, the President of the Spanish Heart Foundation (FEC), Dr. Leandro Plaza Celemín, highlighted that “it is very important to insist on a change in diet towards a cardio-healthy lifestyle amongst the general public, given that it has already been proven in other countries that such measures significantly influence a reduction in cardiovascular diseases and their complications. Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet is the best preventative measure against any coronary disease”.

For his part, Eduardo Corral, Deputy Director General of PULEVA, stressed the importance of reducing coronary risk factors through healthy eating habits and lifestyles: “at PULEVA we work to improve the cardiovascular health of consumers through a healthy diet and healthy lifestyle, because we have demonstrated with a number of studies that this favours the prevention of certain cardiovascular diseases”. At the same time, he sought to thank the College of Physicians of Granada for their collaboration in this event and he reciprocated the desire to collaborate with this institution.
According to data from the World Health Organisation (WHO) cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the developed world and is considered to be the epidemic of the XXI Century, with the principal risk factors being high levels of cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, smoking, diabetes, hereditary factors and little or no regular sporting activity.
Andalucía and Extremadura are the Autonomous Communities with the highest rates of mortality from cardiovascular diseases; and Granada, according to the Institute of Statistics of Andalucia, has the highest rate of mortality in Andalucía.
